Article co-authored by CfU's Alison Milner wins Educational Review Article of the Year Award
Prior to becoming a postdoc in CfU at Aalborg University, Alison Milner was affiliated with the University of Nottingham. While there, she co-authored the article ‘Measuring privatisation in education: methodological challenges and possibilities’ alongside Emily Winchip and Howard Stevenson. The article has been selected as ‘Article of the Year’ for 2019 by Educational Review’s publisher, Routledge.The first annual award was made in 2013. The criteria for selection are:
• communicate research findings or scholarly discussion with exemplary clarity;
• show potential for challenging and/or changing the nature of discourse — that is, the way that education researchers conceive a problem and scope possible solutions;
• show promise for making an original and lasting contribution on a topic of interest to educators.
Alison Milner and her co-authors are invited to a special seminar in December with an invited audience expanding on their thoughts regarding the article. The article focus on the Global Education Reform Movement (GERM) and how measuring a key element of it, privatisation of public education systems, contains certain complexities. They describe their intention is "to demonstrate that complex phenomena should not be oversimplified for the purpose of generating numeric data and that measurement is possible. The results, drawn from a European-wide survey, portray a nuanced pattern of privatisation at this regional level in which public funding and ownership remain important, but schools are commonly adopting a wide range of “private-like” practices".
